Mouth-to-Mask with Supplemental Oxygen

This station is designed to test your ability to ventilate a patient with supplemental oxygen using a mouth-to-mask technique.  This is an isolated skills test.  You may assume that mouth-to-mouth ventilation is in progress and that the patient has a central pulse.  The only patient management required is ventilator support using a mouth-to-mask technique with supplemental oxygen..

You have (5) five minutes to complete this skill station.

Skills Station Details

Takes or verbalizes, body substance isolation precautions

Connections one-way valve to mask

Opens patient's airway or confirms patient's airway is open

Establishes and maintains a proper mask to face seal

Ventilates patient at the proper volume and rate

(800-1200 ml per breath/10-20 breaths per minute)

Connects the mask to high concentration oxygen

Adjusts the flow rate to at least 15 liters per minute

Continues ventilation of the patient at the proper volume and rate

(800-1200 ml per breath/10-20 breaths per minute)

The examiner must witness ventilations for at least 30 seconds.

CRITICAL CRITERIA

___ Did not take, or verbalize, body substance isolation precautions

___ Did not adjust liter flow to at least 15 liters per minute

___ Did not provide proper volume per breath

___ Did not ventilate the patient at a rate of 10-20 breaths per minute

___ Did not allow adequate exhalation
